Numerical Study of Hydrodynamics of Heavily Loaded Hard-Chine Hulls in Calm Water

Hard-chine boats are usually intended for high-speed regimes where they operate in the planing mode. These often designed to be relatively light, but there special applications that may occasionally require fast heavily loaded. In this study, steady-state hydrodynamic performance of nominal-weight and overloaded hard-chine hulls calm water is investigated with computational fluid dynamics solver program STAR-CCM+. The resistance attitude values a constant-deadrise reference hull its modifications more pronounced bows concave convex shapes obtained from numerical simulations. On average, 40% heavier showed about 30% larger drag over speed range displacement modes. Among studied configurations, bow found have 5–12% lower than other semi-displacement regime heavy loadings 2–10% nominal loading, while also capable achieving speeds at weight typical available thrust. near-hull wave patterns pressure distributions selected conditions presented discussed as well.
